Although commercial whalingis now banned by the International Whaling Commissionin many countries, a new and significant threat looms over their survival: plastic pollution in the oceans.
Blue whales are the biggest consumers of plastic!
It is alarming to discover that blue whales, among the largest creatures on our planet, are also the biggest consumers of plastic! Research has highlighted the disastrous impact of ocean plastic pollutionon these marine mammals. A team of American researchers revealed that blue whales ingest an astonishing average of 10 million pieces of plastic per day ! This tragic phenomenon is primarily linked to their feedinghabits. Whales feed at depths where the concentration of microplasticsis particularly high (50 to 250 meters). Their diet consists mainly of krill, a species similar to shrimp that has itself ingested plastic waste.
